| The
concerts of 2001 have been few and far in between, but late in the
Spring of 2001, Michel Marthely, better known as Sweet Micky, gave
us something to remember. Whether some people like the music, but
not the man; whether some like T-Vice, System Band, or Tropicana
more; whether some like the man, but not his bad boy acts; whether
some like the rhythm, but not the curse words; almost everyone has
conflicting opinions of Sweet Micky. That night at Zanzibar Nightclub
in Washington, DC, Michel Marthely showed the Washington community
a different side of his complex persona.
 Zanzibar
on the Waterfront is a beautiful club, and the people showed up
well dress to reflect the setting on that Sunday night. Micky did
not disappoint. He rocked the crowd from start to finish, never
giving the folks much time to sit and catch their breath. Sweet
Micky did not give anyone any reason for much criticism.
He kept the konpa grooving without
much interruption. He interacted
and flirted with the crowd. Micky, accompanied by his usual band
of great musicians, brought the crowd, with ease,to a frenzy by
the
middle of the night, until it was time to go home and get ready
for work or school the next day. Nothing unusual for a Sweet Micky
concert.
However, near the end of the night,
it was discovered that a gentlewoman, in her eighties, had heard
so much about Sweet Micky that came to witness this event for herself.
Michel
Marthely took time out to stop the concert and bring the gray hair
lady on center stage. The crowd watched in amazement, and in respect,
as the two of them danced on stage.
It's hard to know exactly what that
night meant to this woman, but one can expect that she will have
her own personal opinion of Sweet Micky, or better yet, of Michel
Marthely. |
